Introduction to Aromachology

In the 1980s, the scientific world started to be interested in the influence of odors.

Annette Green, the Priestess of the Fragrance World for over forty years, foresaw this trend and she coined the word Aromachology. She highlighted the influence of scents on the actions and behavior of people. (“Spritzing to Success with the Woman Who Brought an Industry to its Senses”).
Visionary, she shaped the trajectory of the modern perfume industry and predicts the predominant role of perfumes in the years to come in all aspects of life and in particular that one day public spaces will feature “centers of sensory fulfillment”.

She created the category Aromachology through the Sense of Smell Institute she established in cooperation with the Fragrance Foundation.  They developed the science through the funding of sensory doctors, psychologists, scientists and chemists in colleges and hospitals around the world.

Annette Green’s vision lies in the knowledge of the path of odors. A volatile molecule does not smell until it is deciphered by the limbic system nestled in the brain. It plays an essential role in behavior and is involved in emotions as well as in the formation of long-term memory. Thus, a smell can make us react instinctively, without there being a cognitive action, even before putting a reflection on it.

This theory, which has since been proven, tends to develop in many areas related to well-being and health as she predicted. Thus, in pediatrics, the Maison de Solenn, offered in Paris in 2005, a workshop to discover odors and create perfumes for children and adolescents suffering from eating disorders.

These workshops allow them to express themselves spontaneously and gradually regain self-confidence. The powers of odors are also considerable in the face of diseases specific to old age such as Alzheimer’s, dementia, or cancer.

The Meeting Space of the Gustave Roussy Institute in Villejuif has created an olfactory workshop for adults to put their illness into perspective and give them additional keys to fight the disease. Realizing that they can control their sense of smell, they realize that they can control their body and get the best of the disease.

Rich in these teachings, the Master Parfumeur Consulting team is developing Aromachology in three essential life situations, adoption, aging and end of life.
